Detecting the web edge is not an easy task, especially for high-speed endless belts, such as the wire in a paper machine:

• mechanical switches wear out and can also damage the edge of the web;
• The horizontal oscillation usually cannot be controlled sufficiently finely with a digital switch;
• Sophisticated measuring systems, in turn, cannot withstand the high environmental stress caused by temperature, humidity and pollution.
